The challenge was to enhance a listed design icon without diluting its essence. Sensitive heritage meant every intervention needed to be carefully considered, while occupiers expected a workplace that could compete with London’s best-in-class office environments. The task was to preserve character and craftsmanship while introducing the resilience, sustainability, and amenity demanded today.

Lateral led award-winning architects Squire & Partners in a refurbishment strategy rooted in restraint and respect. Key architectural features such as fair-faced concrete, floor-to-ceiling glazing, natural light, and river views were preserved and celebrated. Enhancements included upgraded building services, extended amenity provision, and new terraces, creating a modern workspace experience that remained true to the building’s design pedigree.

The result is a reimagined Conran Building — a workplace that honours its heritage while delivering to modern standards. Located at the heart of Shad Thames, it connects history with contemporary demand, offering a unique office environment defined by character, resilience, and authenticity. The project secures the building’s legacy as both a design icon and a destination for the next generation of occupiers.
