AI and life sciences are reshaping industries worldwide, and Camden’s Knowledge Quarter has emerged as Europe’s leading hub for this convergence. It is home to global leaders such as Google DeepMind, Meta, OpenAI, and NVIDIA, alongside pioneering life sciences companies including Relation Therapeutics and Isomorphic Labs, and global pharma anchors like GSK, Novo Nordisk, and AstraZeneca. These sit alongside world-leading institutions such as the Francis Crick Institute, UCL, King’s College London, the Alan Turing Institute, and the Wellcome Trust — creating an unparalleled ecosystem for discovery and innovation.

Challenge

Through a public procurement process, Camden Council sought a partner to extend the Knowledge Quarter and create an inclusive approach that delivered both homes and economic opportunity. Lateral set ourselves an additional challenge: to go beyond generic labs and offices by building a platform shaped by deep proprietary research and our Cluster Integration Model — addressing ecosystem gaps and enabling the convergence of AI and life sciences.

Solution

Camley Street is conceived as a hyper-flexible platform for innovation-led companies. Designed to evolve with the shifting needs of AI groups, biotech, medical robotics, advanced manufacturing, and their convergence, it offers adaptable infrastructure, shared resources, and curated connections. Companies don’t just occupy space — they embed within a collaborative ecosystem that drives innovation and impact.

Outcome

Following a competitive 12-month process, Camden Council selected Lateral and Ballymore as its preferred partner for Camley Street. More than a building, it will be a next-generation innovation hub: catalysing AI–life sciences convergence, delivering social value, integrating the local community, and creating pathways into an inclusive, innovation-led economy.
