Lateral and Amazon Capital Acquire the Conran Building in Shad Thames

Date 22nd January 2021

Lateral, in joint venture with Amazon Capital, has acquired the Conran Building, a landmark property in Shad Thames, London. Designed by Hopkins Architects for product designer David Mellor and later occupied by Sir Terence Conran, the building is an icon of Britain’s post-war design culture and the regeneration of London’s riverside.

Rob Beacroft, co-founder of Lateral, said:

“The Conran Building is a unique piece of design history. Our vision is to enhance its heritage while creating a workplace that meets contemporary occupier needs, ensuring the building continues to inspire for years to come.”

The acquisition marks Lateral’s commitment to repositioning design-led, underutilised assets in London. The Conran Building offers an opportunity to balance architectural legacy with modern workplace requirements, including resilience, sustainability, and enhanced amenity.

Lateral plans to work closely with award-winning architects Squire & Partners to develop a strategy that preserves the building’s character, celebrates key architectural features such as floor-to-ceiling glazing and river views, and delivers a flexible, modern office environment for the next generation of occupiers.

The acquisition positions the Conran Building as a distinctive destination in Shad Thames, connecting its historical significance with contemporary workplace demand.
